Senior Photos in La Grange, Hinsdale, and Western Springs: How I Pick the Right Spot for Every Senior
If you're beginning your search for a senior photographer around La Grange, Hinsdale, or Western Springs, you might be surprised how many great locations sit right here in the western suburbs. What I love about senior sessions isn't just finding a beautiful backdrop; it's figuring out the right backdrop for your specific senior, and at the right time of year. The same spot can feel completely different depending on who's standing in it and what season we're shooting in, and that's something I spend a good deal of time thinking about for each of my senior clients.
When to book your senior session
While there isn’t really a “right” answer to this question, most families reach out in the summer before senior year kicks off. That timing works great since the weather cooperates, your senior isn't yet buried in homework/activities and sports, and you're ahead of the fall rush when everyone suddenly remembers they need photos. ;) My busiest season is fall for family sessions, as such availability can be tight. That said, if you're reading this later in the year, it's not too late! Fall also provides beautiful scenery to work with, and if you’ve missed fall, I have also shot some of my favorite sessions in the Spring (generally mid-to-late April/early May) of their senior year. Don’t stress!
Why the right location depends on your senior, and the season
A location is never just a location to me. The same spot in a forest preserve in Hinsdale can feel completely different in early June light versus late October, and the flora can look completely different as well. It can also feel different depending on your senior’s personality. If they are soft-spoken and reflective or outgoing and full of energy sometimes the location may or may not be an ideal fit. Before I ever pick a place, I'm thinking about your senior first, and the season second. Those two things together tell me exactly where we should go.
Romantic, urban, country, or forest, how I choose a vibe that fits
Some seniors feel most like themselves somewhere soft and romantic, think golden light, flowers, a quiet corner of a park. Others want something with more edge, brick walls, city textures, a downtown feel. Some want wide open country, and some want the kind of dense, layered forest look that feels more rustic. I've got go-to spots across the western suburbs for every one of these moods, and part of my job is asking the right questions before your session so we land on the one that actually fits your senior.
What to wear, and how many outfits to bring
Bring a few outfit options that feel like your senior, not what you think a senior portrait is supposed to look like. Solid colors and simple patterns tend to photograph best, long flowy skirts/dresses are always a hit with the girls, and busy patterns or big logos tend to pull focus away from your senior. If they have a signature look, a favorite jacket, a certain pair of boots, bring it. And don’t forget something totally casual for a comfy vibe. It is also helpful to bring a bottom piece (jeans or shorts or skirts, etc.) with longer lengths to allow for comfortable seated poses. Those small personal touches can make a gallery feel authentic to them years down the road.
What actually happens during a session
A session typically runs sixty to ninety minutes, and we're moving the whole time, walking, finding light, trying a few different looks. It's part creativity, part photoshoot, part just hanging out. Some of the best photos happen in between the planned shots, when your senior forgets we're working and just starts being themselves. Also, I bring a wagon to help ease the transport of odds and ends and additional outfits.
How I get real photos out of a senior who isn't into this
A lot of seniors show up a little reserved, and that's completely normal. My job is to get past that pretty quickly. I talk to them like a person, not a subject; we joke around, I give them something to do instead of waiting for them to do something, and I never make anyone hold a stiff pose and smile on command. By the middle of the senior session, most seniors have forgotten to be self-conscious, and that's usually when the best photos happen.
